This art show is curated Karen and Sharon Mackey, founders of Mackey Twins Art Gallery, founded in 2005. This exhibition is organized by the New York Parks and Recreation's Art & Antiquities division in conjunction with Park's Ebony Society Black History Committee, which has helped to organize an annual Black History Month celebration in the Arsenal Gallery since 1991.

Harlem Fine Arts Show 2012

Watercolor "Community Affair"~Stacey Brown

Stacey will exhibit at the prestigious Harlem Fine Art Show February 10-12, 2012. This show features the 100 most prominent black artist of the 21st century. The artists will exhibit at the historic Riverside Church, which is nestled in the heart of Harlem, New York. The Harlem Fine Arts Show 2012 is toted as the premiere showcase for modernand contemporary African Diasporic art. This year, the voice and reach of the show is extended with the addition of the Harlem Fine Arts Show Magazine. The magazine will premiere as an insert in the Sunday edition of the New York Times.

The city of White Plains New York will preview the show, and will feature the work of famed photographer James Van Der Zee, renowned for his documentation of the Harlem Renaissance whose famous subjects include Marcus Garvey, and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.

be held January 12, 2012, at the Reckson Building in White Plains, New York.

The Harlem Fine Art Show will also feature visual and sculpture artists such as Woodrow Nash, Dane Tilghman, Najee Dorsey, Joyce Lomax, George Nock, Leroy Campbell, Ray Grist, and Frank Frazier. Stacey was invited to paint live at Congressman John Lewis' Fundraising Event at Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint. The fundraising event was held to raise capital for John Lewis' congressional campaign run in 2012. The soulful sounds of Toni Byrd, a regular performing artist at the juke joint, floated through the room while Stacey painted, and the patrons mingled. Congressman Lewis gave a passionate speech about the state of America, and the strides that needed to be made to initiate change in the near future. At the end of the night, Stacey presented Congressman Lewis with the impromptu painting, which was fluid with vibrant with color, and documented the event in a very artistic way.

Stacey is pleased to announce that he is a regional finalist in the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series Art Competition. This national art competition is in partnership with the Russell Simmons Rush Philanthropic Art Foundation, and Bombay Sapphire. In it's second year, they have teamed up once again to launch a nationwide search to identify the finest undiscovered talent in the field of visual arts.

Stacey's watercolor, "Enjoying Hyde Park Chicago, and his sculpture, "Family Strength" are to be exhibited on October 12, 2011 from 7-10 p.m. at Atlanta's Mason Murer Gallery along with other regional finalists.

The Avisca Fine Art SHOUT Exhibition

Avisca Fine Art Gallery, a premiere art establishment located in Marietta, Georgia held a SHOUT Exhibition of fine visual artwork last month. The exhibition sought to examine the culture impact of gospel music, and analyzed it's place in American Christianity, popular music, and everyday life. As a first time visitor to the gallery, I was greeted warmly by the staff, and was offered a glass of my favorite Barefoot Wine. As a made my way through the space, I was awe struck by the shear magnitude of the work. The artists' renderings of the theme of the exhibition traveled through many genres, from sculpture, to oils, to clay, and acrylics. Each piece was original in it's interpretation. Several major visual artists participated from Maurice Evans, to Lisa Mathews, Leroy Campbell, Najee Dorsey, April Harrison, Charly Palmer, and photographer Jim Alexander. Many of the artists were present at the opening exhibition, mingling, catching up with each other, and talking about their work. Stacey exhibited as well for the first time with Avisca, which was very cool. I adore this type of gathering because it offers me the opportunity to view new amazing works, and interact with the artists directly. I spoke directly to Najee Dorsey, a local Atlanta visual artist, about his new stand-alone installation, "People of the the Book." It had wonderful embellishments, beads, and found objects. He asked for my interpretation, and what I saw in his work. It reminded me of going to church in the country with my grandmother, as I carried my little bible, and handkerchief. It's so nice when the artist wants to know how a person feels when they observe their creations.

The Farmburger Cow

The Farmburger Experience Art Project is moving along quickly! Stacey has given the Farmburger cow definition. Cutting out and painting the cow had its own process. It was sketched by hand, then cut out around the sketch. The fb cow will give the artwork a 3D effect, along with the other design elements. The Odd Fellows Building on Atlanta's historic Auburn Avenue was the setting for an intimate art show with several Atlanta based artists. Stacey, Kevin O'Keith, and George Nock exhibited their latest works. September Gray Art Consultants facilitated the event, and beckoned each patron to experience the wonderful original works. The Odd Fellows Building has its own historical significance, as it formerly housed local black business along Auburn Avenue, and was the site of black Atlanta's dances and social functions during the 1920's and 1930's. The Farmburger Experience in Motion

The Farmburger Experience Art Project

Stacey is excited to announce his latest creative endeavor, The Farmburger Experience Art Project. He was commissioned by Farmburger Restaurant in Decatur, to create a custom signature "experience" painting for their new location in Atlanta's Buckhead. Farmburger is not your typical burger joint. They are a cohesive team that includes a farmer, restaurateur, a chef, and a butcher, who have united to redefine what a burger should be. Each burger has its creative beginnings with grassfed beef, seasonal veggies, and fresh ingredients, all from local farms. Basically, each burger is a work of art, and beckons eating to be a celebration, and an experience.


Stacey lays the foundation

Well, here is where Stacey comes in. He is in the beginnings stages of creating a custom painting that will convey artistically all that Farmburger is. They are committed to their farm & table philosophy, and are rooted in the community by utilizing locally grown agriculture.

Farmburger has mastered the art of the one-of-a-kind burger, so it makes perfect sense to have an artist like Stacey convey that experience into visual art for their Buckhead location. Creatively, Stacey has already sketched the project in his head, and now it is headed to the drawing stages. He has laid a foundation of white paint, that will enhance the overall painting, and will make the color, "pop", as he says. He will then continue with a color scheme that will encompass the feeling of a local farm, contemporary community, and the funkiness of Buckhead. The Beautiful Restaurant, a staple in the southwest Atlanta community, serves up mouthwatering soul food with an unmatched southern style. For thirty years, it has become a common place for meeting old, and new friends. While running daily errands, Stacey encounters numerous scenes, worthy of an artistic portrait to be immortalized in watercolor. Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech

Stacey's art will be included in a "Miniature Perspectives" exhibit by the Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech. This installation will include miniature works of Stacey's new "Inspired" watercolor series. The collective body of work will include his observations of urban life, seen through the eyes of a watercolorist.

This exciting exhibit will run August-September, and will open the 2011-12 performance season, with an opening reception for either August 22 or 24, 2011.

The 2011 New Orleans Experience

We exhibited at the 2011 New Orleans Jazz Festival at the end of April. This is always a great show with great art, food, and must-see musical acts. Local musicians performed on the Congo Square stage where we exhibited such as Erica Falls. We also had the pleasure of the musical stylings of John Legend. Many Atlanta artists exhibited such as Upjohn, Kimmy Cantrell, Elliot Hubbard, and Calvin Walton, to name a few. If you have never experienced Jazz Fest, it is worth the trip to New Orleans. We met art fans from as far away as Christ Church, New Zealand. That tells you how good it is!

Atlanta-based visual artist Radcliffe Bailey exhibits Memory as Medicine at the High Museum. This exhibition explores the memory of American history to encourage healing and supereminence through his artistic interpretation. It will feature 37 works ranging from paintings, sculptures, mixed media, photos on metal, and works on paper.

Memory as Medicine is the most comprehensive exhibition of art by Atlanta-based artist Radcliffe Bailey to date. It includes many new works and others never before presented publicly. The exhibition highlights underlining themes in Bailey's work represented by his signature layering of imagery, culturally resonant materials, and text.

The exhibition is organized around the broad themes of "Water," "Blues," and "Blood." "Water," invokes the Black Atlantic Passage as a site of historical trauma as it highlights the fluidity of culture and traces Bailey's own artistic and spiritual journey. "Blues" includes works that point to the importance of music as a transcendent art form. "Blood" focuses on ideas related to ancestry, race, memory, struggle, and sacrifice.

Radcliffe Bailey: Memory as Medicine is organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. The exhibition has been made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius. Additional support has been provided by the Ed Bradley Family Foundation, the Lubo Fund, Jack Shainman Gallery, Vicki and John Palmer, Marjorie and Steve Harvey and members of the Radcliffe Bailey Guild.

Fine Art by Stacey Brown to exhibit at Civil Rights Museum

Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum

Stacey has been invited to a solo exhibition of his new urban watercolor series, "Inspired" at the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum in Savannah, Georgia. The exhibit will be open to the public, and begins at the end of October, and will run through November.

Georgia's best new history museum chronicles the civil rights struggle of Georgia's oldest African American community from slavery to the present. There are three floors of handsome photographic and interactive exhibits, including a NAACP Organization exhibit, a fiber optic map of 87 significant civil rights sites/events, a lunch counter where "sit ins" occurred, and segregation exhibits. All of these elements are a part of the continuing education of the public on the history of the civil rights struggle in Savannah and Georgia. The museum is located in historic Savannah in a five level building that was erected in 1914 as the Wage Earners Savings and Loan Bank for Black Savannahians, the largest Black bank in the country at that time.

Stacey's new watercolor series will document the civil rights movement in Savannah, bringing to life the struggles, and the triumphs of that era.

World-Renowned Artist Willard Wigan at Nicole Gallery Chicago!

The fascinating art of Willard Wigan will be on display at the Nicole Gallery in Chicago. Painting since the age of 5, his art is created of such miniscule proportions that it cannot be seen with the naked eye. His micro-sculptures are visible on through a microscope, and usually sits within the eye of a needle, or the top of a pin head. Wigan and his work have has been featured on 60 minutes, and numerous news outlets throughout the world. If you live in Chicago, this is a special exhibition, and should not be missed!

The Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint is open for business in downtown Atlanta! The VIP reception was a resounding success, with almost 500 people in attendance. Stacey's mural was revealed, and was received warmly by all. The restaurant is a work of art in itself, with dynamic design elements, and funky interiors. From the reflective floors, to the imported lamps, everything in the restaurant is of superior caliber. Kudos to the design team! Swing, Strut, Sway has finally settled in it's new home at 200 Peachtree Street. It has been a wonderful artistic journey for Stacey, and it was bittersweet seeing it leave the studio. The final reveal will occur at the grand opening, and you don't want to miss seeing for the first time, the mural Stacey has been working on during most of 2010. The grand opening date of January 14th has changed, and a new date will be announced in the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

Stacey is pleased to announce his participation in THE NEXT COOL THING!

The Next Cool Thing is a three-day showcase of local Georgia-based creative resources to support the infrastructure of the growing film and television industry. It will introduce new and established resources for the interior design/build/event and performing arts communities.

Inspired by the super cool movie of the early 90's, "Mo Better Blues" Stacey will recreate a scene from the film, with his musically influenced artwork as the backdrop. This collaborative design effort will be styled as a club scene with sculptured musicians, partygoers, drinks, food, and more.

Interior designers, film set designers and suppliers and event designers and members of the performing arts community are collaborating to produce creative history. This event is a showcase of the best of the best in all creative fields. Save these dates!

The characters in the mural are coming to life, and are taking on their own personality. Jukin' Joe is ready to leave for a little dancing, but we told him the restaurant wasn't ready yet!

Stacey hosted a few young art lovers at his studio on Friday. They had the opportunity to view the Sweet Georgia Juke Joint Mural first hand before the unveiling in January! It is 90% complete, and will be ready for hanging in December. The excitement is building, and the children were full of questions about the process, and how he created such a massive painting. He explained his texture techniques, and pointed out elements added to the mural that will be included at the restaurant such as tile, metal, and fabric. Stacey also painted a small watercolor, but could not finish because it was time for lunch! See the pics below!

Stacey is in the home stretch of the mural project! We will hate to see it leave the studio, but it will have a new permanent home at 200 Peachtree Street in January. The installation will begin in December, and only a few people have seen the entire painting, and it has been fun keeping it a secret during the past few months! It exudes the spirit of the restaurant, and will be a conversation piece for the patrons who visit. An interesting aspect of the mural is the photography of legendary photojournalist Jim Alexander. He has wonderful documentation of authentic juke joints of the past, and Stacey has incorporated a few of his work in the mural. He has lived this musical history, and has documented it wonderfully over the past 40 years! Atlanta's Global Concessions visits Stacey at the B Complex!

Stacey has made extraordinary progress on the Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint mural, and invited the developmental team to view the progress. The synergy of the team is amazing, and design ideas continued to flow during the meeting. The mural has the design elements of the restaurant with metal, warm colors, and fabric. It will be installed within the next few months, and will be seen by all of Atlanta. This is an exciting time for the city, because the Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint Restaurant will infuse an energy into downtown Atlanta that is well deserved with art, great music and food! We are looking forward to the opening!

We had a great turnout at our fine art celebration at the B Complex! Stacey was excited to announce his mural project at the new Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint Restaurant that will be located at 200 Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta. The mural will capture the essence of the theme of the new facility. The painting will have the flavor of juke joints of the past, with a touch of modern flair. The project will span an entire wall of the restaurant, and will be a conversational centerpiece. The Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint is slated to open early 2011. We will keep you posted on the progress of the mural with a video documentary, details soon!

The 27th annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival was held the last two weekends of April. There was a cornucopia of fabulous music, food, and of course art. Stacey exhibited the first weekend, and was delighted to have 4 young people arrive at the booth eager to purchase original art for their new rooms. The parents allowed each child to chose a painting that reflected their personality. It was great to have such enthusiasm for fine art from such young people! I am sure they will collect art for years to come!

The African American Fine Art Collector Paul Jones

Renowned African-American Fine Art Collector Paul Jones passed away on January 26, 2010. He will be remember as a pioneer in the collecting of black art. He had one of the largest collections of African-American art in the world. A majority of his collection is housed at the University of Delaware. I had the opportunity to fellowship, and chat with Paul Jones on several occasions, and he was always filled with wisdom about the importance of collecting art for future generations. I would send him e-mails about events we would host, and he would always answer back with a positive note. He told Stacey and I how proud he was of the job we were doing getting the word out about black art. He invited Stacey and I to his home to view his collection, but we never made it by. I know he is telling the angels about his collection, and how much he loved art.

Here are a few snapshots of during the opening reception of the exhibit of his fine art collection at Studio Clout Gallery in Atlanta.

Happy New Year to all! We had an awesome 2009, and are looking forward to an even better 2010. Stacey has been preparing for the new art season with an eclectic new style, which includes sculpture. He has been thinking about trying his hand at sculpture for a while, and 2010 is the year! Look for it in the next blog.

In November, Stacey held an art class for kids on Saturdays. He taught the basic fundamentals of watercolors. Each child had the opportunity to interact one on one with Stacey, while they learned about landscapes, trees, and structure. It was a lot of fun, and we looking to offer classes again in the near future! Check out the pics below!

Stacey had the opportunity to speak to middle school students in his hometown of Murfreesboro, North Carolina! He was invited by Brunet Parker, a business education teacher at Hertford County Middle School. Mrs. Parker is the director of FBLA, the Future Business Leaders of America, a business organization for students. Stacey was able to speak to the entire eighth grade class about his journey in becoming a full-time artist. He fielded questions, and offered encouragement to eager students. See pics below!

Stacey taught a youth watercolor class to the Boys and Girls Club of Savannah, GA

On August 10th, Stacey had the pleasure of teaching 40 students of the Boys and Girls Club of Savannah the wonders of painting with watercolor! Students were given the opportunity to view Stacey's exhibition at the King Tisdell Beach Institute, which included his glass collage, cracked glass, and watercolor collection. He explained his many techniques of each medium, and pointed out that the process of painting takes a lot of practice, and a lifetime of learning.
The children were then taught the basics of watercolor painting. Stacey painted a quick rendition of a small landscape, showing how to blend colors, and create shapes. They had the opportunity to create their own painting, while Stacey offered instruction, and advice. From their faces, many enjoyed the process, and found themselves inspired! Stacey Brown at King Tisdell in Savannah!

Stacey has been invited for a solo exhibition at the King Tisdell Cottage Foundation in Savannah, Georgia. The foundation was created to research, collect, interpret and present African American history and culture through exhibits, art, films, lectures, oral history, tours and publications. It endeavors to promote and disseminate information concerning this history, and to celebrate the contributions of African Americans, especially in Georgia and the Sea Islands of South Carolina. It also seeks to foster continued interracial understanding and appreciation of different cultures.The exhibition, appropriately named "Shards" will feature twenty new Savannah inspired works on glass by Stacey. It will include daily scenes of the lifestyle of the people of Savannah, as well as its lush landscape. The exhibit will begin August 9 with an artist talk, and will run until October 3, 2009.

The True Colors Gala!

Stacey was a featured artist at the True Colors Theatre Company Gala. The Greens in the Day, Blues in the Night benefit is held every year, and the evening festivities were hosted in the beautiful home of Mr. Reuben and Dr. Kim McDaniel. This fundraiser is held to raise funds to support the youth education programs at True Colors Theatre Company. True Colors Theatre Company was founded by the acclaimed director Kenny Leon in 2002. The theatre has developed the August Wilson Competition for high school students in an effort to incorporate the work of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright into the Metro Atlanta school curriculum.
The art was beautifully orchestrated by Fine Art Concierges, who specialize in fine art procurement, and corporate art collections. Atlanta based artists such as Charly Palmer, Buchi Upjohn, Maurice Evans, Grace Kisa, George Nock, and Najee were all in attendance. The home was adorned with original works such as mixed media, acrylics, and 3-dimensional art. We wish True Colors much continued success, and are in hopes that high school students will benefit from the commitment of True Colors to the art of acting.

Philanthropist Dexter Davis will host a fine art affair for the 2nd Annual Mingle With A Mission to benefit the Up On Your Luck Foundation. Stacey has been a contributing artist for several years to this worthy cause. This non-profit organization assists homeless women and children in the metro Atlanta area. It is estimated that 50% of women make up the homeless population in the United States. With the assistance of Up On Your Luck, women who are victims of domestic violence have a safe haven through quality, and affordable housing. Focus on Love

Stacey will exhibit this weekend at the Sister & Friends Art Show in Bloomington, Illinois. This is his third year participating, and he is excited about the Art Mosaic theme. Tom Joyner gives a Full Ride!

Stacey and I had the distinct honor to attend the Tom Joyner Foundation Full Ride Scholarship Dinner hosted in Atlanta. The foundation flew in, and hosted ten high school finalists in their competition for a full-ride scholarship. We met and greeted each finalist, and would make any parent proud! The students came from outside of Chicago, as well as Alabama, and Florida. The winner, after a lengthy process is Blaine Robertson of Reserve, Louisiana. He attends East St. John High School, and will attend Howard University upon graduation. His dream is to become a math teacher on the high school level. I think his willingness to give back to his community really impressed the Tom Joyner team. There aren't many black male teachers, and Blaine will become a great one in a few short years! Congratulations Blaine!

Congratulations to local Atlanta artist Kerream Jones as he exhibits at The Art of Jazz Exhibition at the Cedarhurst Center of the Arts in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The Art of Jazz will represent the complex styles and intricate rhythms found in jazz music. A select group of artists were chosen to demonstrate how this genre of music inspires them to produce works that are vibrant and radiate with expression and intricacy. Stacey went home to North Carolina in September, and rescued a few of his originals. His mother was in a house fire last year, so the house is inhabitable. Fortunately she is fine, and lives in Atlanta now. Stacey was amazed to find that a few of his paintings survived the fire, and brought them home. I thought it was interesting to see the progression of his talent. He started painting watercolors at the age of ten. As a full-time artist, he has evolved into painting on glass, with acrylics, and on canvas. He seems to still like painting flowers and landscapes, but has stayed away from animals. He painted these three in 1985 and 1986. He came to Atlanta in 1988 and attended the Art Institute of Atlanta, and the rest is history! See the progression on the watercolor page on sbrownart.com.
